We are looking for a Principal Backend Engineer with 6–9 years of experience to lead the design and development of scalable, reliable backend systems for a fast-growing B2B platform. You will drive backend architecture, solve complex technical challenges, establish engineering best practices, and work closely with product and engineering teams to build systems that can scale with the business.
What you'll do
- Own the backend technical architecture and long-term engineering direction.
- Design and build highly scalable, reliable, and maintainable backend systems.
- Lead architecture and system-design discussions for complex product and platform initiatives.
- Drive the development of core services, APIs, integrations, and distributed systems.
- Identify and resolve performance, scalability, reliability, and technical-debt challenges.
- Establish engineering best practices around code quality, testing, deployment, observability, and security.
- Work closely with product and engineering leadership to translate business requirements into robust technical solutions.
- Lead technically complex projects from architecture and planning through implementation and production rollout.
- Mentor senior and junior engineers and raise the overall engineering bar.
- Review and improve existing architecture to ensure the platform can scale with growing users, transactions, and business complexity.
- Participate in and drive incident management, root-cause analysis, and reliability improvements.
Must have
6–9 years of hands-on backend engineering experience. Strong proficiency in Python, Node.js, Java, or a similar backend language. Deep experience designing and building scalable backend systems and APIs. Strong understanding of system design, distributed systems, scalability, and high availability. Strong experience with relational databases and database architecture/optimization. Experience working with cloud infrastructure, preferably AWS. Proven experience owning and driving large, complex backend projects end-to-end. Strong understanding of software architecture, design patterns, testing, CI/CD, and production engineering. Ability to make sound technical decisions and drive engineering standards across teams.
Good to have
Experience with marketplaces, e-commerce, SaaS, or B2B platforms. Experience designing microservices and event-driven architectures. Strong experience with Kafka, Redis, RabbitMQ, queues, or other distributed technologies. Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud-native architectures. Experience designing high-throughput, low-latency systems. Experience with payments, inventory, order management, logistics, or third-party integrations. Strong observability experience across monitoring, logging, tracing, and production debugging. Experience mentoring engineers and influencing technical direction across multiple teams. Startup/high-growth product experience.
